Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to bring in snacks for the upcoming MCAS ELA testing on Thursday, Friday and Monday. I have copied the list at the bottom of this newsletter for your reference. You are welcome to send in the food at anytime and I will store it in our classroom or the school refrigerator. In addition to snacks, please help your child get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast. We will start testing right at 8:30 so it will be helpful for them to have a filling breakfast that will sustain them for a little while. I will give them the pretzels, goldfish, gum and hard candy to eat during the test as these are not messy or distracting to eat. Kids should bring in their own water bottle, and I will have bottles for those who forget.
Last week, author Gregory Mone visited the 4th grade and spent time in each classroom giving us tips about revising. He was funny and informative and everyone enjoyed hearing his stories about how he gets an idea and turns it into a book. His Number #1 piece of advice… “Make a Plan!” Phew! Thank goodness the 4M Smarties all know the importance of planning their writing before beginning. We’ve got that covered! Some of the titles he has already published include, Fish, Dangerous Waters, and the children’s edition of Boys in the Boat. Thank you to the PTO for sponsoring this wonderful day.
We will be finishing Shiloh this week. The students have been meeting to discuss the novel and writing responses to what they have read. There are a lot of moral dilemmas in this story that have been seeds for interesting discussions!
Next week, we will begin our science unit about inventions. The Invention Convention is scheduled for Wednesday, May 25th at 6:00 pm in the classrooms. More information will go home next week. It is always powerful to hear firsthand about someone's work or life passion. If you or someone you know works as an innovator or inventor, please let me know if they would be interested in speaking to the 4th grade.

- What do you remember most from Gregory Mone’s visit?
- What is the problem Marty is facing in Shiloh? Would you make the same choices as Marty?
- What is the difference between transparent, translucent and opaque materials?
