The 4M Smarties were buzzing with activity this week! They learned about the parts of narrative writing and we collaborated to write a descriptive paragraph about a Halloween costume. They used sketching as a pre-writing strategy to focus their ideas and then wrote a paragraph with sensory details. They also shared their writing with a classmate and gave advice about what could be added to the descriptions.
We also read a picture book biography about Martin Luther King, Jr. and discussed author’s purpose. The book was written by Dr. King’s sister and told about their childhood. On Friday, we read three poems by Langston Hughes and compared his dreams to MLK Jr.’s dreams. I taught the students the acronym A.C.E. to help organize a written response to reading.
In math, we reviewed types of angles, lines and polygons. There will be a math test on Unit 1 on Thursday of next week. A study guide will go home on Monday night for students to practice and bring any questions back to class before the test.
We also started our study of geography and learned about different types of maps. We labeled a map with the 7 continents and 5 oceans and everyone is bringing this map home today. There will be a test on the 7 continents and 5 oceans on Wednesday.
Thank you to Lynn Barclay and Joanne Golden for volunteering to be the 4M Smartie Room Parents! Thank you also to Anita Ryan and Kathy McGrail for helping with math games. Math Games are everyone Friday 11-12 and the sign-up is above.
Ask a Fourth Grader!
* What does A.C.E. stand for?
* Can you describe the Halloween costume that you wrote about?
* If there was a museum display about you, what would be in it?
* What is the difference between a line, a line segment and a ray?
