What a busy and exciting week we had in 4M! We started a new science unit about soil, rocks and landforms. Students were given four mystery soil samples that they observed and then used sketches and words to describe. In the end, they had use their background knowledge and observations to decide where each soil sample could have come from… desert, river stream, or forest. We also simulated the weathering process by enthusiastically shaking jars with rocks in them to see the effects. Loud and fun!
I introduced the students to our class blogging website on Kidblog this week and everyone posted their first comment about the book they are reading independently. Next week we will reply to classmates and learn about how to write positive and specific replies.
Our Global Read Aloud book is The Wild Robot by Peter Brown! Students researched different types of robots and recorded “What I thought…. But, now I know….” Over the next four weeks, thousands of classrooms around the world will be listening to the same read aloud. We will Skype, blog and send postcards with our thoughts, reactions and questions to other students far from Hingham.
In reading, we started the first story in the Journeys anthology. Students read an excerpt from “Because of Winn Dixie.” We discussed and wrote about the flashback in the story and why the author chose to add it.
In math, the Unit 1 math test will be sent home on Tuesday. Please sign and return the test to school. I will keep them in a file.
Math Games are on Fridays, 11:00 - 12:00. If you would like to come into the classroom and help, please sign up on the Google Sheets by clicking on the button at the top of this page. If you are unable to access the Google sheet, just email a Friday that you would like to come in and I will add your name. I usually have some photocopying to do on Fridays, as well, if anyone is available. Sign up on the same sheet. Thanks!
Ask a Fourth Grader…
… What are the ingredients of soil?
… What is a conglomerate rock?
… What did you learn about robots?
… What is a flashback?
