We had a very exciting week in 4M! We started our Global Read Aloud book, The Wild Robot. Using the beginning of the book as our anchor, we wrote responses about what features a robot would use to help it survive in the wilderness. We posted these responses on our classroom blog and received responses from other classes in the U.S. We also posted our questions and comments about the book on the blog of a classroom in Zurich, Switzerland. On Friday, we Skyped with a mystery classroom about the book and then asked questions about where they lived, until we discovered that they were in Saskatchewan, Canada! Finally, we wrote postcards to 22 of the states on our postcard exchange with our predictions and opinions about the book. It’s been amazing to connect with students around the world and discuss this shared story.
In math, we started Unit 2, which will focus on multiplication. I will give the students a baseline multiplication facts quiz on Monday to evaluate each student’s automaticity with their 2-10 facts. We will make flashcards of the facts that students need to practice, and most will need to review for 5 minutes a day over the next few weeks. There will be a reminder of this on the purple sheet.
I will introduce our spelling groups and routines on Monday and we will practice all the ways to review words in school this week. This will become a regular homework routine the following week.
Students investigated landforms this week in social studies and I explained the landforms project to them on Friday. They have the materials needed to complete this assignment and have 3 weeks to work on it. (It is due October 27) We will discuss how to plan their time and each step during the next 2 weeks.
We would love to have some parents help with math games on Fridays, 11-12! Please sign up on the Google sheet above. If you have trouble using Google Sheets, you can email me a Friday date and I will sign you up.
Ask a Fourth Grader…
* Which state did you write a postcard to?
* How did Roz end up on an island? Do you think she will survive?
* Which 4 landforms are you going to pick for your landforms project? What are you going to use to make a 3-D model?
* How confident do you feel about your 2-10 multiplication facts?
