The 4M Smarties competed in the Battle of the Books on Thursday. The Brainy Bunch (Sanaa, Brady, Dalton, Gunnar, Thomas and Aliyjah) went up against a team from Ms. Farrell’s room and although we did not prevail, it was a great competition and celebration of reading. In the end, a team from Mrs. Pravia’s class won over a 5th grade team. Go 4th graders!
We finished up all the written work and final meetings about Joshua’s Song this week. I showed the students pictures from my visit to the Tenement Museum in NYC and we discussed the poor living conditions that immigrants faced when they came to this city. The story also includes the Great Molasses Flood, a historic event in Boston, which they found fascinating. We smelled and tasted molasses to imagine the sticky wave pouring down the streets of the North End.
Thank you to all the parents who have volunteered for the Physics Olympics on June 16th. I’ll be back in touch with details closer to the event.
We will be ending the year with a project about the book students are reading independently, so they should have a good book choice with them on Monday. Our classroom library is also a great place to look for a book.

* What did you learn about life in tenements in the 1900’s?
* How did your team do in the Battle of the Books?
* What independent reading book are you going to read next week in school?
