I haven’t written in while, but that doesn’t mean the 4M Smarties haven’t been busy! We completed a study of Greek myths, wrote two narratives about traveling on a magic sled and another about visiting Ancient Rome. Students learned how to build an electrical circuit to light a bulb and conducted experiments to test factors that affect the momentum of steel balls on a ramp. In math, they learned the partial quotients method of long division and how to measure angles with a protractor…. Just to name a few!
Last week we started a new social studies unit about immigration. Students looked at photographs, documents, graphs and read oral histories to answer questions like, “Who came to America in the late 1800’s?”, “Why did people immigrate to America?” and “How did new immigrants feel when they arrived?” This week we will visit the Lowell Mills to learn about the immigrants that lived and worked in the mills in the 1900’s. This is a new field trip for the 4th grade and we are excited about what we will see and learn. Because it is a long bus ride, students must be at school on Wednesday, March 14th on time because we will be leaving immediately upon arrival. We will be returning at the end of the school day and students must bring a snack for the bus and lunch with a drink. Everything should be disposable.
This past week there was a “Book Tasting” for students to select the next book they will read for Literature Circles. All the titles are written by Andrew Clements and students rotated around each table “tasting” each book by looking at the covers and reading the first few pages. They will start reading in their selected groups on Monday.
In math this week we completed a few assessments and will start Unit 7 on Monday. This unit focuses on multi-step number stories with decimals, fractions and multiplication. These number stories are continually more complicated, so we are using our growth mindset to understand what is being asked, write number models to solve and check our work for accuracy.
We also finished listening to “Restart” by Gordon Korman, which was our third read aloud this year. It was an exciting one! We are anxiously awaiting the release of the sequel to “The Wild Robot” which comes out this Wednesday and being shipped directly to us!
Ask a Fourth Grader!
* What are the “push” and “pull” factors that brought immigrants to America in the late 1800’s?
*What Andrew Clements book are you going to read for Literature Circles? Why did you select it?
*How many ounces are in a pound? How many pounds are in a ton?
