The 4M Smarties were on fire this week! We read two stories in the Journeys anthology and analyzed the structure of the texts. The first story, My Librarian is a Camel, told about the different ways kids can get books in other countries because of the geography of where they live. The second story was in sequence format that told the steps to getting a book published. Mr. Davidson came into the classroom and, together, we modeled a discussion about the stories. The kids then talked in small groups about what they had read and practiced good conversation skills.
In math, we finished Unit 1 and took the test. The corrected tests will be returned to students on Tuesday. Unit 2 focuses on multiplication, so everyone should brush up on their facts. Students need to know the 2-12 tables by December. I will be sending home fact cards with the 11’s and 12’s next week. Thank you to Mrs. Golden for helping with math games today!
The 4M Writing Workshop was also in full work-mode! Almost everyone has finished writing their descriptions of a Halloween costume and published their final drafts. We have practiced using sensory details, sentence variety and precise word choice for this piece.
We practiced the spelling homework activities in school this week and I will assign the first spelling homework this week. Spelling sentences at the 4th grade level must be at least eight words long and show the meaning of the word. Students should also practice using sentences variety so each sentence starts in a different way.
Ask a Fourth Grader….
* How do you find the perimeter of a rectangle?
* How do you play Bizz Buzz?
* In your reading this week, what was the most interesting way kids get library books in other parts of the world?
* What makes a great book discussion?
