Thank you to all the parents who were able to come to Curriculum Night on Wednesday. I enjoyed meeting everyone and know we are going to have a wonderful year together. Thank you also to all the parents who volunteered to be room parents. Lori Ierardi and Adrien Duncan will be our 4M Smartie room parents this year. They will collecting money or donations for the “Hingham Foodie” basket this week that our class will donate to the Foster Fall Fair.
In reading this week, the students read a magazine article and compared it to the fiction story we read last week. They were able to find ways people are helpful to others in both stories and organized the information on a t-chart. We also focused on making connections while reading and students thoughts about times when they have been helpful to others. Making connections is one of the strategies that good readers use. When our inner voices say, “This reminds me of…” or “I remember when I….” we are making connections with what we read.
In math, we worked together to solve a complex math problem and then practiced explaining our math thinking with words, numbers and pictures. Students also reviewed the traditional method of subtracting and how to use parentheses in a number sentence. There will be a math test on Unit 1 on Thursday. A list of our Unit 1 skills will go home on Monday. I will also send home a username and password for the Student Reference Book that students can access online. This past Friday, each student learned how to log on to this math resource so they can try it at home and use it to study for the test. Let me know if access to the internet is difficult at your home so I can help find an alternative method for studying.
Mrs. Hoguet, our school adjustment counselor started her Steps to Respect lessons with the 4M Smarties this week. She will lead four lessons in upcoming weeks about bullying and how to treat others with kindness. A letter went home explaining the focus of this week’s lesson.
Thank you to Greg Lane (Brady’s dad) and Molly Sellers (Vaughan’s mom) for helping with math games this week! Thanks also to Stephanie Steele (Carter’s mom) for photocopying!
There will be a social studies test on continents and oceans on Friday. A study guide went home on this past Friday and I have posted an oceans/ continents online game on the "Links" page of this website.
